OPUNTIALUSA PALMAPICOS – FIGUEIRAS DA ÍNDIA, FIGOS E DERIVADOS, LDA.

Agroalimentar / Elvas

Description

The company was born in 2013 from the desire of two friends to invest in agriculture within the scope of an innovative culture in Portugal – the cultivation of Indian Fig in an orderly orchard – which has seen growth in terms of possibilities for commercial exploitation, in addition to the high nutritional value already known.
The company's activity takes place within the scope of the production of prickly pear for the sale of fresh fruit or for the food industry.
The orchard grew in phases, that is, in 2013, 1.3 ha (opuntia ficus indica) of the orange and green variety were planted, in 2014 another 2 ha (opuntia ficus indica) of the orange variety were planted, and finally in 2015 the last 2 ha of purple variety (opuntia robusta). The orchard follows a grid formation (5 x 5) occupying an area of 5.30 ha on a property with a total area of 7.5 ha. The property has a borehole that, through a pumping/storage/drip irrigation system, irrigates 2 ha, with the remaining 3.30 ha being in a rainfed system.
We want to believe that with our culture we will be making our contribution to environmental sustainability that involves investing in organic farming, maintaining a balance between local fauna and flora, and investing in renewable energy as we already use it to obtain water for irrigation. in part of the orchard. Furthermore, we are investing in a culture of reduced water needs.
That being said, the conditions will be met for good economic profitability so that a fair value is attributed to the production.
These are our motivations: Environmental sustainability, renewable energy, culture with reduced water needs, growing economic potential.
