Since the Roman occupation of Mértola, there have been records of the production of honey, which is highly appreciated as it results from the combination of a unique climate and flora. More recently, the Marques family has been contributing to the construction of the history of honey in the region, first with Francisco Marques, followed in 1984 by Francisco Pereira Marques and since 1994 with Nuno Marques, dedicating themselves to beekeeping since 1945 and maintaining the oldest house producing rosemary honey in Mértola is operating.
